Early Treatment

When Should My Child First Visit the Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists suggests that most children should have an orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. This early screening allows Dr. Moss and Dr. Wall to assess whether orthodontic treatment is necessary and to determine the ideal timing for any required interventions. Many local dentists are also trained to spot early orthodontic issues and may refer you to our office before the age of 7 if needed.

Why Start Orthodontic Evaluation Early?

Early orthodontic evaluation can help ensure that permanent teeth come in properly, maintain space for future teeth, and reduce the risk of injury to protruding front teeth. If early treatment is necessary, Dr. Moss and Dr. Wall can:

  • Guide jaw growth and the alignment of incoming permanent teeth
  • Regulate the width of the dental arches
  • Create space for permanent teeth
  • Avoid the need for extractions
  • Reduce the likelihood of impacted teeth
  • Address thumb sucking and other issues affecting speech or swallowing

In essence, early intervention can simplify future treatment once all permanent teeth have erupted.

Is Early Treatment Right for Every Child?

Not all children will benefit from early orthodontic treatment. Some orthodontic issues are more effectively treated during the teenage years once all permanent teeth have erupted.

Certain skeletal problems may require more growth before they can be addressed. Dr. Moss and Dr. Wall will tailor the treatment plan based on each child’s specific needs. If early treatment is not recommended, the child will be placed in our orthodontic supervisory program.

What Is the Orthodontic Supervisory Program?

The orthodontic supervisory program is for patients who are not yet ready for active treatment but need ongoing monitoring. This program allows us to track the eruption patterns of permanent teeth and make timely recommendations.

Sometimes, early removal of baby teeth can prevent or shorten future braces treatment. We will keep your general dentist informed of any updates or recommendations. Patients in this program are usually seen every 6-8 months at no additional cost to ensure we start treatment at the most opportune time.

Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment does more than enhance appearance. Braces can:

  • Improve bite functionality
  • Make teeth easier to clean
  • Prevent excessive wear on teeth
  • Extend the longevity of natural teeth

Can Early Treatment Eliminate the Need for Braces Later?

While early treatment can address significant issues and prevent more severe problems, it may not always eliminate the need for braces during adolescence. Usually, a shorter phase of comprehensive treatment (Phase II) with full braces is required once all permanent teeth have come in. However, in some cases, further treatment may not be necessary.

Should We Continue to See Our Family Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?

Maintaining dental health is important, especially with braces and other orthodontic appliances. We recommend that you visit your family dentist every 6 months for check-ups and cleanings to ensure optimal dental health throughout orthodontic treatment.
