Emergency Care

Orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, but when they do happen, it’s important to know how to respond. Whether you are dealing with an issue related to braces or aligners or have experienced a direct injury to your mouth, our team is here to help you stay comfortable and safe. The information below explains what to do in common orthodontic emergency situations and when to contact our office.

What Is Considered an Orthodontic Emergency?

An orthodontic emergency is any situation involving your appliances or teeth that causes pain, injury, or that cannot be comfortably waited until your next scheduled visit. Many issues can be managed temporarily at home until we see you in the office.

What Should I Do If a Bracket or Band Becomes Loose?

Loose brackets or bands can happen during treatment. If this occurs, try to leave the appliance in place and avoid touching it. Contact our office during regular hours so we can schedule a repair appointment as soon as possible.

What If a Wire Is Poking or Irritating My Mouth?

If a tie wire or archwire is causing irritation, place orthodontic wax over the area to protect your cheek or gums. You can also gently tuck the wire under the archwire using a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab. If discomfort continues, call our office for further instructions.

Can I Fix a Broken or Bent Archwire at Home?

In some cases, a broken or poking archwire can be gently pushed back into place with a pencil eraser. If necessary, clean nail clippers may be used to carefully trim the wire. If you are unsure or the problem persists, contact our office during patient hours.

What Should I Do After an Injury to My Mouth or Teeth?

If you experience a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, apply ice to the affected area right away to reduce swelling. Contact your family dentist as soon as possible for an evaluation and X-rays if needed.

Who Should I Call If a Tooth Is Knocked Out or Fractured?

If a tooth is knocked out, displaced, or fractured, contact your general dentist immediately. They have the tools and materials needed to manage dental injuries. After your dentist addresses the injury, we will take care of any orthodontic appliance adjustments that may be needed.

What If My Orthodontic Appliance Is Dislodged After an Injury?

If an appliance becomes dislodged following an injury, we will repair or replace it after your dentist has completed treatment, based on your comfort level and the condition of your teeth.

What If an Orthodontic Emergency Happens After Office Hours?

If you experience significant pain or discomfort from an orthodontic issue outside of regular office hours, contact our office for instructions on how to reach the on-call team member. We will help guide you through the next steps and schedule care as soon as possible.

If you are ever unsure whether your situation requires immediate attention, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to support you throughout your orthodontic treatment.
